The foundational work of Anglicanism in Port de Grave was through the efforts of layman John Tucker who held services in his own home. In 1826 the first Church of England in Port de Grave was built in Ship Cove  and a Rev Charles Blackman was the first resident rector. To accommodate a growing congregation a new church was built in 1878 and the present St. Luke’s Church was built in 1926. During the tenure of Port de Grave’s best known rector and WW1 chaplain, Father George Maidment, the four-room St. Luke’s school was built.

Local men that went on to become Anglican clergymen included Rev. Canon Samuel Dawe, Rev. Wilfred Taylor, Rev Maxwell Andrews and Rev. Harry Andrews. Today the Anglican Church remains an active vibrant presence in the community of Port de Grave
