Willie was born in 1942 in Hibb's Cove as one of ten children, and grew up in his father's (Chesley Petten) fishing boat. Having been on the water at an early age, he knew the importance of putting his trust sheltered coves, solid anchors and the the workmanship of his earthly father. In 1961 he gave new meaning to these aspects of his live in a spiritual way when he committed his trust to God and devoted his life to the work of Christ. Willie went on to be a fisher of fish and a fisher of men for the next 32 years. |

A devoted and well-loved family man, Willie had a large circle of influence, both in Port de Grave and in the business community and abroad. Willie also worked tirelessly with the Gideon's International and was the area Camp President for the last three years of his life. The respect for his work was quite evident as seen in the 6000 Russian Scriptures that was dedicated in his name when he passed away. |

Before he passed away Willie's wish was that he could do something special for the Lord. Willie's wife Doreen and son Dwight and daughter Lois brought this wish to fruition by sponsoring the building of a Bible School Dormitory in Zambia, Africa known as the 'Petten Apartments" (shown below) and "the Joyful Sound House" (currently under construction) an orphanage in The Villiage of Hope, Malawi, Africa. Willie's memory is also acknowledged locally through the "Willie Petten Memorial Scholarship" which is awarded to a top Port de grave student each year.. |
