SIGHTSEEING- JAILHOUSE MOUNTAIN |

|
Jailhouse Mountain got its name from the presence of a two room jailhouse that was built at the base of the mountain during the latter part of the 1800’s. The building consisted of an area that was partitioned in two by planks. One room was used as a cell and the other as the magistrates office. |

The only physical remains to the jail is a set of handcuffs that was found on the site and is now on display at the Fisherman’s Museum. The rocks that made up the walls of the jailhouse was used in the building Hussey’s wharf. |

The most infamous characters that were housed in the jail was Mandeville and Spring the employees of John and Catherine Snow who was tried and hanged for his murder. Catherine was also tried and convicted as an accomplice but her sentence was delayed because she was pregnant at the time. She was hanged from the Newfoundland Courthouse in St John’s on July 24 1834 and became the last women executed in Newfoundland.
