This is the second of two schools in Hibbs Cove. The original school had been a house containing a grog shop that was turned into a one room Protestant schoolhouse in 1857. |

George Cranford was the first school master and Raymond Barrett was the last teacher when the school ( the current building) closed in 1966. Later the schoolhouse would become the art studio of American artist George Noseworthy and he also developed a children’s art school. The old school held Newfoundland’s first ever children’s art exhibition in 1971. Some of the children’s artwork, including that of Newfoundland artist Gary Kennedy was retained and can be seen in the Porter House and Museum. |

Today the old school house is set up with a 1950’s rural school setting and is a tourist stop in conjunction with the Fisherman’s Museum and Porter House. |
